How to Buy a Car Out of State

Widening your search beyond your home state can turn up a better price or a hard-to-find trim — but it adds paperwork most local buyers never have to think about. Here's what changes.

Sales tax usually follows you home

In most cases, you pay sales tax based on where you'll register the car — your home state — not the state where you bought it. Some states have reciprocity agreements that credit tax already paid elsewhere, while others don't. Check your home state's DMV rules before assuming you'll avoid double taxation.

Emissions and safety inspections

A car bought out of state may need to pass your home state's emissions or safety inspection before it can be registered, even if it already passed one where you bought it. States with strict emissions rules, like California, sometimes have extra requirements for out-of-state vehicles specifically.

Temporary registration or transit plates

To legally drive the car home, you'll typically need a temporary registration or transit permit from the selling dealer or state — this is usually handled by the dealer at time of sale, but confirm it before you drive off, especially for a long trip home.

Before you commit Call your home state's DMV (or check their website) before finalizing anything out of state. Rules on tax credits, inspection requirements, and temporary permits vary enough that assumptions from a different state can cost you time or money.

Financing across state lines

Most lenders can finance an out-of-state purchase without issue, but confirm with your lender ahead of time — some have restrictions on where the vehicle can be titled relative to where the loan is issued.

Shipping vs. flying to pick it up

For a long distance, compare the cost of flying out and driving the car home yourself against hiring an auto transport service to ship it. Shipping avoids mileage and wear on a car you haven't fully broken in yet, but adds cost and a delivery window to plan around.

Get the pre-purchase inspection regardless

Distance makes an independent inspection more important, not less — see the used car inspection checklist for what to check, or arrange a local mobile mechanic near the seller to inspect it before you travel.
